KS2 science: a four-section look at forces, friction and gravity

Examine forces, what they do and how they can be measured, with this four-section programme for Key Stage 2 science. Skateboarder assesses how the various materials used for a skateboard have different relationships with the forces of friction and gravity. Some help to reduce friction, others help to increase it. Parachute Jump looks at skydivers, investigating the forces in action before and after the canopy is opened. Pedal Power investigates where the force comes from to push bicycle pedals and make it move. This section goes into the lab to see a chicken leg being dissected to examine muscles in more detail. Finally, Sliding on Snow shows a primary class the forces of gravity and friction when snowboarding and tobogganing.

Teach KS2 pupils about algebra using the story of a party

A Key Stage 2 maths algebra lesson starter based around how many people can sit at a birthday party table. The birthday boy and girl must sit at opposite ends of the table with all their guests sitting down either side. A single table can sit six children, one at each end and two on either side. When a second table is added, ten children can be seated (two at either end and four at each side). As the tables and the number of children grow a pattern starts to appear. Can your pupils work out the pattern and predict how many children could come to the party if there were 100 tables? A 16-year-old girl talks about the bullying that ensued as a result of her haircut when she started secondary school, in this PSHE lesson and assembly starter for primary and secondary pupils. The girl explains how an adventurous hairstyle she had cut as she started secondary school caused her to suffer terrible bullying at the hands of other pupils. She was confident and popular at her primary school, and was only bullied when she moved to secondary school, highlighting how the transition from primary to secondary can sometimes be fraught for pupils. Amateur astronomer Bill Forest gives a primary class a tour of an observatory in this lesson starter for Key Stage 2 science. A look at the first black people in Britain, and their impact

This KS3 black history lesson starter video looks at some of the black people who came to Britain centuries ago and the role they played in British society. There has been a black presence in England as far back as 211AD when Septimus Severus, one of the African roman emperors, died in York. Historian Tony Warner explains there were black people living in Britain in the 16th - 18th centuries, who were neither slaves nor servants. Throughout the centuries, there is evidence of independent and influential people of Caribbean and African descent in Britain. One record is from 1511, when a North African trumpeter was depicted on the Westminster Tournament Roll. He was probably employed by both Henry VII and Henry VIII. Black men and women made appearances in the diaries of Samuel Pepys and in 18th century portraits. Tony explains how by the late 16th century, trade had opened up between West Africa and Britain and Africans began to settle here, especially in seafaring places like Bristol, London, Liverpool and Glasgow. Most towns have a trading or financial area and evidence of black history is often very prevalent in these areas. Tony visits the Bank of England, feels the weight of a real solid gold bar, and talks about its origins. He explains how some of Britain's earliest trading power came from gold mined in Africa, in an easy-to-understand way for Year 7 to Year 9.
