This thought-provoking resource on the subject of abusive teenage relationships can be used to stimulate discussion for Key Stage 3 and 4 PSHE. A 16 year-old girl talks openly about her experiences with a relationship which went from being treated "like a princess" to violence, pregnancy, self harm and suicide attempts. A 16-year-old girl talks about the bullying that ensued as a result of her haircut when she started secondary school, in this PSHE lesson and assembly starter for primary and secondary pupils. The girl explains how an adventurous hairstyle she had cut as she started secondary school caused her to suffer terrible bullying at the hands of other pupils. She was confident and popular at her primary school, and was only bullied when she moved to secondary school, highlighting how the transition from primary to secondary can sometimes be fraught for pupils. This video can be used to start discussions on questions including; why are people bullied because of their appearance, and does this happen a lot?

Formulae for the areas of different shapes for KS4 maths

Fran and Dave explain areas and the formulae for different shapes in this video aimed at Key Stage 4 maths classes. Fran's friend wants to know how much it will cost to re-tile her bathroom and Dave is promised a homemade cookie if he is able cost it. Dave wants the largest cookie, but to work out which cookie is the biggest, he needs to work out their surface areas. As Dave arrives at the house his first task is to work out the area of the walls to be covered by tiles, a job that is complicated by a mirror and windows. Separately Fran works out the area of the walls, and then changes the figure when her friend decides she wants a circular and then arched mirror. Meanwhile Dave works out the cost of re-tiling the bathroom, and is rewarded with the circular cookie, which he worked out was largest. When the cookie arrives it is considerably smaller than he expected, does this mean he got the formula for the area of a circle wrong?

A look into the research of biochemist Ceri Harrop, who specialises in respiratory medicine and developing new treatments for people with breathing difficulties. As part of her research at the University of Manchester, Ceri meets with athlete Wayne Ashall, a 400m runner and hopeful for the 2012 Olympics, despite having asthma. Wayne's personal best is only seconds off the world record, and he's hoping Ceri's work will help him perform even better. Ceri and Wayne carry out a spirometry test, a common test to diagnose lung conditions, and Ceri dissects a set of animal lungs to explain how they work and the effects asthma has on them. Medication plays a big part in enabling Wayne to compete, so Ceri takes Wayne through the different aspects of her research, which may lead to new treatments and possibly even a cure for asthma.

Simon Noble is a highly talented autobody repair technician who can repair a car to more accurate levels than when it first left the factory. In this video we see Simon perfecting his technique ahead of the WorldSkills competition, held in Japan in November 2007. Simon's eye for accuracy is one of many skills that helped him achieve success in Japan. At the competition he had to replace a front chassis leg with millimetre accuracy and carry out a rear quarter panel repair only evaluated by eye. Find out how, after four days of competition, Simon's level of skill and accuracy earned him a silver medal.

Eleven mathematic sequences filmed around Gaudi's church in Spain

These 11 short sequences, shot in and around Gaudi's La Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona, each display a different aspect of mathematics for pupils to explore, investigate and discuss. Each sequence poses a question intended to stimulate mathematical discussion rather than to elicit a correct answer to a computation. The programme is intended to be used in sections, stopping and replaying the video to analyse the information. It can be shown to pupils on a whiteboard where the pictures can be annotated, or worked on by pupils individually, or in groups on PCs or laptops. The mathematical content rewards repeated viewing and provides a rich source of mathematical imagery.

Top scientists talk about the threat of a swine flu pandemic

Four UK scientists who are working to combat the swine flu virus talk about their work and the threat a swine flu pandemic poses. Contributors include Dr. Othmar Engelhardt, a scientist at the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control (an HPA affiliated lab) who helped crack the genetic code of the current virus and develop a swine flu vaccine. We also speak to Dr. Tarit Mukhopadhyay, a bio-chemical engineer at UCL, who advises the government on the most efficient methods for producing vast amounts of vaccine as quickly as possible. Professor Wendy Barclay of Imperial College, London, an influenza specialist who is on constant lookout for swine flu virus mutations, talks about her work. Later Professor Neil Ferguson from the Medical Research Council, talks about his work as one of the world&rsquo;s top advisors and biological modellers. Finally, students and young people who have had swine flu themselves talk about how the virus affected them.
