How one-to-one tuition is raising standards in Southampton

The introduction of one-to-one tuition at a college in Southampton, is improving standards and attitudes amongst staff and pupils. Since starting one-to-one tuition, students and staff at Woodlands Community College, Southampton, have already seen great benefits with two students, in particular standing out. A partially-sighted student who is making the most of the opportunity to improve his reading skills, proves the importance of one-to-one tuition. Later, a student who had previously been excluded, demonstrates the progress he has made.

A boys' school in south London improves their students' 3D awareness by visiting local buildings, making paper shapes, using student mentors, and looking at the algebra of origami. Woolwich Polytechnic school in London goes on a trip to the Gherkin and Greater London Authority City Hall in central London, both buildings with unique structures. Back at the school, fired up after their excursion, the students create their own structures and in the process find out a lot more about algebra and geometry.

Creative ways of working with maps in geography for KS3 and KS4

Discover how a secondary school has developed Key Stage 3 pupils' map skills in geography with the use of bingo and 3D models. When Emma Thom took on the role of head of geography at Kingsbury School and Sports College in Birmingham, she recognised a need to improve understanding of maps among the pupils. She found that text books and traditional lessons were putting some pupils off the subject. With her colleagues, Emma set about developing more creative lessons to both invigorate teaching and inspire the children. The teachers behind the project say it has created a new enthusiasm for geography among the pupils and achievement is up at Key Stage 4.

According to former customs officer Stuart Reilly, dealing with drug smugglers and bootleggers was often easier than coping with a class of Year 8 students! Now enrolled on a graduate teacher programme, Stuart says he is finding teaching much harder than he expected and has turned to Teachers TV for help. In this programme, we send life coach Gladeana McMahon down to Dane Court Grammer School in Broadstairs to meet with Stuart and see what she can do to help. Classroom management and dividing time fairly between classes are what Stuart identifies as his main problem areas. Having observed him in the classroom, Gladeana offers Stuart her expert advice and returns two weeks later to see what changes he has made.

The second part of a true story charting the life of a child who was consistently abused by her parent from a young age. The child, now a young woman, recounts her moving story from the age of 11. For reasons of confidentiality, her story is recounted by an actor. The story is interspersed with interviews, conducted by the young woman herself. Remaining anonymous throughout, she interviews child protection professionals who explain how they intervene in cases of child abuse; something that did not happen in this case.

A school in Blackpool responds to local educational needs

By designing their own curriculum, Collegiate High School in Blackpool has responded well to the needs of its pupils. The town's lack of investment has created areas of deprivation, leading to low aspirations and under achievement for many pupils. The Ulysses project aims to make the pupils more independent and successful learners. Their success has lead to them being a case study for the Key Stage 3 curriculum reforms. Individual needs are met by the staff, in a combination of a tutor group format and cross-curricular teaching.

Raising attainment with an innovative cross-curricular approach

Hinchley Wood School in Surrey has developed Thinking Smart, a new approach to the Key Stage 3 curriculum based on the RSA's Opening Minds programme. This high-attaining school believes that its students can do even better by Thinking Smart, using the cross-curricular approach with an emphasis on group work and core competencies. The school's innovations have also led to an 80 per cent drop in exclusions and a 50 per cent drop in behaviour incidents. Head of science Sue Eacott has been won over by the approach. In this programme, she teaches a lesson on cells which is full of wonderful examples of student creativity and collaboration.
