How a school is bringing the past to life using archives

An inspiring example of how one school is working with its local public archive to bring the past to life. Practically every town and village in the country has a public collection of archives. They are a massive but hidden resource for schools. This programme shows how one school makes the most of its local archive to enhance and bring to life their work on the topic of slavery. Martin Phillips, a teacher from Four Dwellings High School in Birmingham, and a team from the Birmingham City Archives, have developed an outreach session for his mixed ability Year 8 history class. Work starts in the classroom where archive material is bought by the library. The archives are analysed and studied by the class. Spurred on by the session in the classroom, Martin takes the class into the library to see what else the archives have to offer. Here the class learns how to preserve and repair archive material and what an archive library has to offer.

Discover ancient Egypt in a Liverpool museum

In this programme Year 7 pupils are treated to a visit to the World Museum in Liverpool as an introduction to Key Stage 3 history. Teacher Gareth Rogers from Weatherhead High School on the Wirral chose a day of Egyptian-themed sessions to make best use of the collections his local museum has to offer. On the trip they find out about mummification through role-playing, handle Egyptian treasures and practice writing hieroglyphics. To make the visit memorable and get material for further study, the pupils take digital cameras to the museum and record what they see. Back in school the next day the pupils develop their ICT skills by preparing a PowerPoint presentation about the day and show it to their classmates.

A language trip to Barcelona and a visit to Hartlepool

A visit to Cadbury World and a Roman legionary museum

Trevor Langston and his group of Year 11 business studies pupils take an educational trip to Cadbury World in Birmingham and a Year 7 class visits the Roman Legionary Museum and Caerleon Fortresses to experience what Roman life in Britain was like two thousand years ago.

A group of students visit the European Parliament in Strasbourg

In this programme, a group of 14- to 16-year-old students embark upon a cross-curriculum visit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Though the students spend some time sightseeing and absorbing local culture, the main purpose of their trip is to participate in a Euroscholar Day; joining with 500 fellow pupils from schools throughout Europe. They learn about the workings of the EU from officials and later get to act as MEPs for the day, debating and voting on topical issues. In doing so the students, from three separate schools in Kent, discover that language is not necessarily a barrier to communication.

Ways to follow up on the success of a school trip

Make the most of school trips with ideas for how to extend the benefits back in the classroom, as Time Savers presenter and deputy headteacher, Jo Parry shares her techniques. Jo is in conversation with Julia Cooper, head of technology at Solway Community Technology College, Cumbria. She shares lots of practical tips including suggested follow-up activities, involving the wider community on your return and ways to build on pupils increased confidence. Jo concludes with some of her own tips on relating trips to theory of knowledge learning and referring back to trips as part of future learning objectives. On the trip the pupils learn about and get an up close view of geographical features such as geysers, waterfalls, volcanoes and glaciers. Follow them on their adventures to see what they saw and learn what they learnt, as well as seeing the benefit of taking a field trip to Iceland.
