A lively debate about what being British really means

Krishnan Guru-Murthy presents a lively debate about what being British means, and the role of schools in teaching Britishness. The panellists include the right-wing writer and academic Douglas Murray, and the author of the Government's report on citizenship and diversity in schools, Sir Keith Ajegbo. Also on the panel are the first black President of the NUT, Baljeet Ghale; and British Paralympian Ade Adepitan MBE. The programme is recorded in front of a studio audience made up of teachers, experts, parents and children.

A fascinating tour through Soho Parish School in London

An energetic tour through Soho Parish School in London, where children come from a wide range of countries and citizenship and diversity pervade the whole-school ethos. We visit a Mandarin lesson, Year 4 PSHE circle time and a school council meeting where good citizenship, respectfulness and empathy are apparent between the 145 mainly Chinese or Bangladeshi pupils. Lunch time is managed in-house where mouth-watering menus are chosen democratically though the school council and reflect the diversity of the children's backgrounds. We also get a glimpse of the world beyond this inner-city school's gates when we join two reception teachers on a school visit to nearby Chinatown.

Pupils learn about the charity Show Racism the Red Card

Year 6 pupils from St John's Primary School, Manchester, attend the launch of Show Racism the Red Card's latest film at Manchester United's Old Trafford ground. After watching the film, the pupils put their questions to a panel of footballers, including Rio Ferdinand and Andy Cole, and hear about their experiences of racism both on and off the pitch. Back at school, the pupils do an activity to help them understand what it feels like to be a victim of racism. Then they set to work on group entries for Show Racism the Red Card's annual school competition, which asks pupils to create work with an anti-racist message behind it. The groups discuss the meaning of racism and use their answers to put together some drama and rap entries. Show Racism the Red Card is a charity which joins forces with professional footballers to combat racism.

A boy's first-hand view of illegal immigration, for KS2 history

Present Key Stage 2 history pupils with a first-hand account of illegal immigration into Britain. This video presents a wealth of cross-curricular opportunities spanning citizenship and geography as well as history. From a young boy's perspective, a primary class can hear how Evrim and his family came to Britain as illegal immigrants seven years ago. Using animation, Evrim describes how the police raided their family home one night, meaning they now face deportation.

KS2 History - The Immigrant's Story

Pupils from semi-rural and urban schools work together in pairs

Year 5 pupils from Thornton Primary, a semi-rural school in West Yorkshire embark on their first visit to partner school Barkerend Primary in Bradford city centre. The visit is part of a year-long linking project exploring the theme of identity, supported by the Schools Linking Network. Working in pairs, the children consider the similarities and differences between each other and their schools, eventually collaborating to design their ideal school. Back at Thornton, class teacher Angela Lodge organises a reflective discussion with a small group of her pupils at the end of the day. The Schools Linking Network began six years ago in Bradford, and is now embarking on a national programme to support other local authorities across the UK in establishing sustainable and effective linking programmes.

Comedian Shappi Khorsandi teaches a primary lesson on refugees

Comedian Shappi Khorsandi returns to her primary school to give a lesson on refugees, as she tries her hand at teaching for the first time. Shappi arrived at Montpelier Primary School, Ealing, in the early 1980s as a refugee, after her family was forced to flee Iran. As part of the school's International Week, she takes a Year 5 class for a lesson on the topic of refugees, using her memoir A Beginner's Guide to Acting English to stimulate discussion on English customs. She then asks the pupils to imagine themselves as refugees, in order to write a diary entry.
