Achieving a whole school approach to enterprise education

Find out how Foxhills Technology College in Scunthorpe is achieving a whole school approach to enterprise education via the appointment of an enterprise champion. Rachel Dixon has spent three years ensuring that enterprise is embedded across the curriculum at the school. This is partly achieved through inter-departmental sessions, allowing teachers to discuss ideas for a cross-curricular approach, with Rachel then suggesting ways in which these proposals can be refined. In addition, Rachel leads a class of low ability pupils as they design and cost a school restaurant, intended to run on a commercial basis in the following term. Finally, she leads a lesson during which older students, known as economic well-being officers, take the lead in assessing a series of enterprise resources and making recommendations as to which would be most attractive to fellow students.

A look at three ICT resources for teaching secondary PSHE/FSA

Creating real businesses for valuable enterprise education

Find out how students at Buttershaw Business and Enterprise College in Bradford are running a commercially successful sub-aqua business within their school, gaining invaluable real world experience in the process. The company, Go Aqua, grew after the popularity of a series of diving sessions in the school pool. Now the students are pulling in valuable revenue by marketing similar sessions to local primary schools, parents and others. Students take on a variety of roles within the business. They are hands-on instructors in the water and hard-headed business people in the boardroom, enabling them to experience aspects of marketing, accounting, logistics and more. Elsewhere, we follow the progress of Year 11 Ilkey Grammar School student Nik as he undertakes a challenge to design conceive, design and cost a consumer magazine during his period with a design company in Bradford.

Two teenagers learn how to budget when living on their own

This programme follows 18 year-old Jo and his 16 year-old brother Tom as they set up home on their own for the first time. The pair are given an average income for people their age and try to stay within budget as they make lifestyle decisions based on what they can and can't afford. The boys start by looking at what they need to have and discover some surprising and painful truths about the cost of essential household bills. Next they make a wish-list of things they think would be nice to have and shop around to see what's within their budget. They learn some useful lessons about interest rates, credit and debt and decide to save up for items on their list. Finally they consider obtaining a luxury item and wonder if they will ever be able to afford that large flat screen TV they have got their eye on. The boys sensibly discuss putting in place a savings plan rather than being tempted to go into debt. Paying your own way is a student resource, designed to be shown in your classroom.

Teenagers discuss money, debt and employment, for KS3/KS4 PSHE

See teenagers discuss money, work, self employment, redundancy, debt and discrimination, in these short videos designed as a classroom resource for provoking debate among Key Stage 3/4 PSHE students. The issues discussed include: financial capability and why money is so often at the root of arguments; whether cars or houses cost more; and why we work and whether we should enjoy it. Debt and discrimination are also explored, addressing how people get in so much debt, and who is discriminated against, and why? These videos raise excellent discussion points for secondary pupils to debate while learning more about social and emotional issues.

 Using outside help to get to grips with financial education 

PSHE coordinator Ann Jobling gets to grips with teaching financial education by drawing on information from the government, charities and financial organizations.Financial education was introduced to the curriculum in 2000 with the aim of preparing every child for the practicalities of adult life. The only problem was that many teachers felt ill-equipped to teach it due to a lack of experience of finance themselves. Ann, PSHE coordinator at Thornaby Community College in Stockton, said that when she started to teach the subject resources were almost non-existent. She looked for outside help and came across a financial charity called PFEG who provided a starting point and enabled Ann to build up a bank of useful information. This programme follows Ann as she uses the internet, worksheets and files provided by the government, charities and financial organisations. We see Ann deliver a lively and inspiring lesson and hear what the pupils have to say. Ann is joined by PFEG consultant Judy Short who comments on Ann?s lesson and offers advice to other teachers who find themselves in a similar situation.The Money Quiz is designed for use by teachers and heads of department interested in finding out how to include personal finance education into school life and the curriculum in an engaging way.
