Discover two schools' creative anti-cyberbullying strategies

This KS2-KS4 lesson-planning resource shows the impacts of cyberbullying and how children can become cyberbullies. It supports Every Child Matters and addresses human health and safety, and personal and social skills. See a drama played out in a PSHE lesson at Bradon Forest School, Purton, depicting a cyberbully accused of posting a picture online without consent. ICT is also used to help create storyboards. At St Mary's C of E Primary School, Purton, the pupils create dramas to learn about cyberbullying, also making lists of their rights and responsibilities when using computers and mobile phones. On hand to provide parents, teachers and pupils with guidance on dealing with cyberbullying is Childnet Education Manager, Ellen Ferguson.

This primary and secondary lesson starter resource demonstrates to Key Stage 2-4 pupils how people's intentions can be misunderstood in emails and texts. A secondary schoolgirl receives a text message from her friend and, due to the lack of face-to-face speech, and room for misinterpretation, she's offended and distressed. This video highlights how cyberbullying can start innocently. It addresses personal and social skills and supports Every Child Matters, and is designed to stimulate KS2-KS4 classroom discussion around e-safety.

A primary school pupil becomes the victim of cyberbullying after a picture of her taken at a friend's birthday party is posted online. The picture is uploaded onto a social networking site without her knowledge, causing her distress.

A new school makes a big difference to a deprived area

The Marlowe Academy, a stunning new school in a deeply deprived area of Ramsgate, has turned around a legacy of previous failing schools, underachievement, and lack of self-esteem among young adults. In 2004, the schools were replaced by the brand new academy with a new focus on social and emotional literacy, which was spearheaded by headteacher Ian Johnson. These changes have seen a marked improvement in trust and respect between pupils and teachers in the school. The introduction of the new Butterflies transition course, which involves parents as well as students, is another key area where the academy is really making a difference.

Discover four schools' approaches to increasing pupils' wellbeing

Four schools' approaches to increasing the happiness and wellbeing of pupils are shown in this whole-school video on personal and social skills in primary and secondary, linked with Every Child Matters. By adopting nurture group principles, headteacher Jeni Barnacle has transformed behaviour and performance at St Andrew's Primary in North Pickenham. The principles involve creating an atmosphere of mutual respect and positive values, with great emphasis on role play and hands-on learning. Year 10 students undergo brain mapping to identify their individual strengths and weaknesses, at King Harold School in Waltham Abbey. The aim is for self-knowledge to provide a route to personal fulfillment. Positive psychology has been introduced to the curriculum at Strath Haven High School, Pennsylvania. And finally, Alsop High School in Liverpool is exploring the use of humour, as professional comedian Steph Davies builds up pupils' self-confidence by running workshops on stand-up comedy.

How and why does a young person receive an ASBO?

This programme, designed for use in the classroom, helps students to learn more about ASBOs and the criminal justice process. Featured in the programme is Dan. We gain an insight into his story, from his childhood through to an exposure to both car crime and drug abuse which lead towards his ASBO. For many this road can further disengage them from society, but Dan demonstrates how the criminal justice system - together with supportive agencies ? can help to bring young people back from the edge.

Emotional intelligence is explored in two secondary schools

How can secondary schools teach emotional skills to teenagers? This programme examines two schools' approaches to the subject and uncovers what their pupils think. The way teenagers recognise, understand and deal with their feelings is now considered vital for good learning behaviour. Consequently, two secondary schools in Wiltshire teach a modular programme in emotional intelligence at KS3 and KS4. The Corsham School, a Specialist Visual Arts College, has a broadly average pupil intake. Springfields Specialist Sports College is an SEN residential school for troubled teenagers who have been unable to cope in a mainstream setting. In a form tutor session on bullying, science teacher Emma Davies at the Corsham School helps Year 7s to recognise discrepancies between their feelings and their actions. At Springfields, pastoral care team member John Rogers teaches his Year 9 group how to change their attitude from negative to positive. A group of teachers explore conflict management strategies 

Arguments and conflicts are a normal part of everyday life, but few people ever develop strategies to deal with them effectively. In this programme, a group of Sussex teachers come together for training, to see how they might improve pupil behaviour. Nia Imani Kuumba, a senior trainer from LEAP Confronting Conflict - specialists in the field of conflict resolution and mediation - leads a workshop for the teachers, exploring strategies to help them better manage conflict in the classroom.

Tips for young people on how they might help resolve conflict

Misunderstandings and arguments in childhood can cover a vast emotional spectrum, but seemingly trivial conflicts will often alter the emotional well-being of a child for an entire school day or longer. This programme visits Ridgeway School in Devon to explore the various strategies that young people can use to help each other resolve such conflicts. Students Emma and Kirsty both felt isolated as a result of conflict at their previous schools but at Ridgeway, have been paired up in a buddy system to help them resolve some of their worries. The school also offers a successful peer mediation training scheme, where students are given advice on how to help others find resolutions to their conflicts. Elsewhere, in south London, teenagers Isla and Annamarie work with LEAP Confronting Conflict - specialists in the field of conflict resolution and mediation ? and demonstrate how they have benefited from joining a growing network of peer mediators.

Monty Roberts adapts his animal-behaviour techniques for pupils

Steve Taylor, a teacher at Kingshurst School in Birmingham, noticed similarities between the needs and behaviour of the children he teaches and the horses he looks after. As a big fan of Monty Roberts, the horse whisperer, he realised that he could adapt the principles Roberts uses with horses and apply them in the classroom. Steve explains how staff "create a safe environment in which learning can take place. Reward positive actions. Never use threats, coercion or violence. Listen. Be patient. Wait for co-operation and be consistent." This programme tells the story of how a whole school has been inspired by the work of the horse whisperer.
