How teachers can learn to build good relationships with pupils

A panel of teachers look at three common primary school scenarios, questioning whether the relationship between teacher and pupil could be improved if the situations were dealt with differently. The panel, led by ECM expert Moyra Healy, considers whether the teachers in the dramatised scenes could have done anything more to improve the final outcomes. Every day, teachers are faced with new and challenging situations; how they deal with each of these relatively small moments can influence long term relationships with their pupils.

How one MFL co-ordinator benefits from coaching and mentoring

Former policewoman Jane Fanshawe has been teaching at Holy Cross RC Primary School near Newcastle for less than four years but has progressed rapidly to become MFL co-ordinator. We look at some of the professional development that Jane receives to support her in her role. The school's previous MFL co-ordinator, Maria Nicholson, mentors Jane through what's expected of the role, discussing a range of factors involved in a successful coaching process. The programme follows Jane into a coaching session, planning with Andrew James what the focus of the lesson observation will be. Maria is on hand to mentor Jane through her approach during the observation. Following her observation, Jane gives Andrew feedback, closely watched by Maria, who in return feeds back to Jane on her coaching technique.

Three primary ASTs show how they meet the professional standards expected of them

A look at how three advanced skills teachers, at Latchmere Junior School in Kingston upon Thames, meet some of the key professional standards expected of them. Kevin Hogston is responsible for creativity and meditation in the school. He has introduced several innovative relaxation and calming techniques for pupils to use and trains other staff to use them, both from Latchmere and other schools in the borough. Jane Seeley is AST for creativity and art. Watch as she teaches one of her special art projects in the school. Jane takes her pupils onto the streets of Kingston to plan an art journey through the town for other schools to use. Sally Crowe's speciality is science and, as well as teaching and running the school's science clubs, she spends one day a week sharing her expertise with colleagues in other schools.
