Discover eight engaging scenarios for starting KS2 maths lessons

This classroom resource for Key Stage 2 maths presents eight dramatised situations highlighting maths problems to be used as starters for primary lessons on fractions, decimals and percentages, or numbers and algebra. Bring maths lessons to life by: using angles to find Pirate Kate's lost treasure; using fractions and percentages to help Nateisha with her packed lunch survey; using division in both The Thief's Problem and The Puppy Problem. Also explore volume and division in Mrs Hanson's Problem; use multiplication in both Piggy's Problem and The Train Problem; and use percentages in The Cake Problem. A suitable year group is suggested for each lesson start, reflected by a tile board at the start of each problem, where the topic is also indicated.

A Year 5 maths lesson about fractions is demonstrated

This great lesson idea, aimed at Key Stage 2 maths, is designed to help pupils understand how fractions are different parts of a whole. After starting with a recap of the language of fractions, Year 5 teacher Sophie Crump, at Burnham-on-Crouch Primary School, gets her class to make their own fraction wall. They use strips of A3 paper, which are cut up into the different fractions. Sophie uses different colours for each fraction so the class can then compare them to help show equivalence. For primary maths, pupils discuss what they're eating for lunch

Introduce Year 5 pupils to fractions and percentages using live-action video which shows a class taking part in a survey on what they're eating for lunch. A girl surveys the contents of her classmates' lunchboxes to see who's eating what for their school lunch. Pupils can then convert this data into fractions and percentages, in this relevant example for Key Stage 2 maths pupils.

A teaching support video aimed at Key Stage 2 teachers featuring maths consultant, Isaac Anoom, teaching a lesson on fractions, percentages and fractions which is then discussed by maths experts. Isaac, also known as Mr Numbervator, is a qualified OFSTED commended experienced class teacher in key stages 1, 2 and 3, he holds a Teacher of The Year Award, is primary maths advisor for Guernsey. His lesson, observed by the class teacher, maths co-ordinator Fran Bradshaw, local authority maths advisor for Hertfordshire, is then discussed, along with some of the difficulties that teachers face when teaching fractions, decimals and percentages. The lesson was filmed at Mount Pleasant Nursery and JMI School near St Albans and features a year 5 class. Making decimals dynamic in a Welsh Year 4/5 class

John Rawlings, local authority adviser for Neath Port Talbot, has been working with maths consultant Richard Dunne and class teacher Pamela Morgan to revolutionise the teaching of decimals.In this programme, we look at Pamela&#39;s Welsh Year 4/5 class which is trialing a system where the vocabulary of decimals and the relationship to vulgar fractions is emphasized.Firstly, the class revise how decimals and fractions may have the &quot;same value&quot; but a &quot;different appearance&quot;. There is then a debate about the difference between 0.12 and 1.2 when expressed in tenths.Group work follows and pupils take a number and break it into its component parts. Again the vocabulary of maths is emphasized as thousandths are introduced. Finally, pupils work in groups to add three decimal place numbers.Some groups work on subtraction, which involves what they call &quot;funny counting&quot; - carrying across one hundredth to make ten thousandths to make a subtraction possible.One of the pupils featured in this programme, Rachel Harris, sadly died some months after the programme was filmed. John Rawlings, local authority adviser for Neath Port Talbot, chairs a discussion between maths consultant Richard Dunne and class teacher Pamela Morgan on teaching decimals at KS2. They review the lesson featured in The Decimal Place 1 and comment on the different approaches adopted by other local schools. They also discuss the value of group work and how talking through calculations gives students a greater understanding. The panel discusses Pamela&#39;s focus on the representation of decimals and how they can be written with the same value but a different appearance. This programme also looks at the number stick and line method to introduce decimals and a teacher who uses an everyday situation, money, as a starting point. One of the pupils featured in this programme, Rachel Harris, sadly died some months after the programme was filmed. KS1/2 Maths - The Decimal Place 2

A brilliant new method for teaching fractions at KS2

A successful method of teaching fractions to primary children is vividly captured in Just a Fraction. This programme follows a group of seven-year-old pupils at Janvrin School in Jersey. The technique used is visualisation. For this only the simplest resources are needed: paper cups carefully cut into halves and quarters, cards representing different fractions - and two tables! The children are invited to write down a maths "story" on a white board. Demonstrators drawn from the class then play out the maths story with paper cups. The sum set is 1 1/4 + 3 - 2 1/4. So one whole cup, then one quarter-cup, are moved from the resources table to the maths table. As the story involves an addition, three more cups are taken to the maths table, then for a subtraction two and a quarter cups are taken from the maths table to the resources table. Next, the children add up the cups on the maths table to complete the story. They move on to see how cards containing the usual notation for a half and a quarter can be transported in the same way. By the end of the lesson, some children understand the concept and can go from the concrete to the abstract, but still visualise the concrete when they are unsure of a calculation. The change of emphasis away from calculation is easy for any child to understand. This programme contains seven clips for whole-class use, preferably on an interactive white board, that will support several lessons. Teachers should view the programmes Just a Fraction and Understanding Fractions and the associated web materials before beginning. <ul> <li>Making a start: introduces the resources and maths tables</li> <li>Addition, subtraction and equals: the cups are used. Quarters are introduced</li> <li>Maths story/real story: the link between the maths story - a calculation on paper - and the real story - shown by manipulating paper cups - is shown. In the second part, students should write out the maths story as they see the real story acted out</li> <li>Multiplication: the idea of using an action to differentiate between addition and multiplication is introduced</li> <li>More fractions: the link between the concrete representation of cups and the symbolic representation with cards is established</li> <li>Moving multiplication on: cards are used to act a real story</li> <li>Imagining cups: manipulating fractions in your head</li> </ul>
