This collection of short dramatised videos is designed for starting Key Stage 2 French lessons. As a primary modern languages classroom resource, it supports the KS2 framework for languages. Filmed in France, the video features native French-speaking children and offer opportunities to develop language skills and intercultural understanding. Three topics are covered: healthy eating, let's start a cafe, and portraits. The accompanying teacher's notes also provide a suggested extension activity for each video, with scenarios presented to prompt discussion and activities in class.

Primary teacher Andy Gaunt is facing the biggest challenge of his professional career - teaching French to his pupils with no knowledge of the language whatsoever. This daunting challenge will be familiar to many primary teachers, with every seven-year-old set to be entitled to learn a new language from 2010 under new government policy. Andy learns a little French for each lesson and then uses a puppet called Pierre to help communicate with the class. The concept is that Pierre is teaching both the pupils and Andy at the same time.

Teaching French using national flags and songs with Year 4 pupils

This Key Stage 2 modern languages lesson idea shows how to teach French masculine, feminine and plural words to a Year 4 class, using a song and national flags. Fanel Belkebir gives each child a flag from one of five countries that are also colour-coded male or female. As the primary pupils sing the song, they have to hold up the correct flag to coincide with the lyrics. The children are not only learning French but also identifying national flags, in a fun and interactive MFL lesson.

A game of pass-the-parcel helps with KS2 French learning

Using a birthday party game of pass-the-parcel in a KS2 modern languages lesson helps Year 3 pupils build their vocabulary and discover a fun way to learn French. Helen Foot, at Hitchin Primary School, demonstrates her great idea for primary MFL lessons, beginning with asking her pupils to repeat in French the months of the year and asking the pupils their birth dates. Helen then plays a game similar to pass-the-parcel to help her class learn vocabulary and structure short question and answer sentences. Holding her parcel aloft, Helen asks her class "what's in the parcel?" The pupil who correctly guesses what's in each layer from a set choice of objects, gets to open the layer. Key Stage 2 children of all ages and abilities enjoy the game, while learning French at the same time. This is a quick, simple, fun and effective means of engaging your class.
