Allegra McEvedy helps a primary class make healthy food

Founder of the Leon healthy fast-food-chain and author of Economy Gastronomy; Allegra McEvedy MBE, introduces a wary group of primary school children to the joys of bran. Having trained dozens of young cooks in restaurants over the years, Allegra and teacher Sally Keck make a batch of banana muffins with the schools cookery club. The muffins contain bran, a healthy ingredient that might prove unappetising to children, but instead Allegra gets the class cracking eggs, mashing bananas, and creaming butter and sugar. The bran is just another ingredient, and class are swept along with Allegra's friendly, attentive teaching and her energetic pace. Finally, Allegra gives her closing thoughts on getting children to eat healthy food at a young age.

A personal insight into living with Asperger's Syndrome

Troubled Minds is a series of four short animated films, narrated by young people who have been real-life sufferers from a range of psychological illnesses and syndromes. In this video, a seemingly well-behaved and well-performing school student, describes the emotional distress he felt as his Asperger's syndrome caused him to struggle socially at school.

Discover two schools' creative anti-cyberbullying strategies

This KS2-KS4 lesson-planning resource shows the impacts of cyberbullying and how children can become cyberbullies. It supports Every Child Matters and addresses human health and safety, and personal and social skills. See a drama played out in a PSHE lesson at Bradon Forest School, Purton, depicting a cyberbully accused of posting a picture online without consent. ICT is also used to help create storyboards. At St Mary's C of E Primary School, Purton, the pupils create dramas to learn about cyberbullying, also making lists of their rights and responsibilities when using computers and mobile phones. On hand to provide parents, teachers and pupils with guidance on dealing with cyberbullying is Childnet Education Manager, Ellen Ferguson.

Combating internet and text bullying, for primary and secondary

This classroom resource helps primary and secondary PSHE pupils learn effective ways of dealing with cyberbullying. This lesson starter addresses human health and safety and supports Every Child Matters. Cyberbulling is an issue for staff and pupils at both primary and secondary level. 20 per cent of young people claim to have had first-hand experience of bullying or threats via emails, chat rooms or texts. This video encourages classroom discussion around e-safety, helping pupils know how to respond when a secondary pupil is being cyberbullied.

In this programme, recovered annorexic Nicole describes the dangerous eating disorders that once threatened her life. Nicole talks openly about her feelings of not belonging and the challenges she faced in deciding to overcome this disorder.

Thinking about the scientific link between health and diet

Food adventurer Stefan Gates gets pupils thinking about the science linking their health and diet by preparing a crispy worm salad, in a video designed for use in Key Stage 2, 3 and 4 science and PSHE lessons. Gastronuts presenter Stefan Gates prepares and eats a salad using crispy worms, jellyfish and giant ants. Stefan makes the point that although people may eat very different foods around the world, they still contain essential nutrients like protein and vitamins. Stefan then explains how some foods are healthier than others, and he wonders if there's ever any reason why certain foods should be banned. This introduction to the idea of choice and restriction of food, and how diet and nutrition are linked to health, can be used to encourage primary and secondary pupils to think about healthy and unhealthy foods and to debate how much control there should be over the food we eat.

Primary resources to promote healthy living are dicussed

In this edition of Resource Review we look in detail at three resources to help with promoting healthy living at primary school level. Year 3 teacher and PSHE co-ordinator Dee Buchanan recommends The Big Food Challenge, a box of games and activities to motivate healthy eating in children; Early Years co-ordinator Dawn McAllister demonstrates Street Feet, a realistic road layout; and PSHE Co-ordinator Sally Parr advocates a CD Rom for teaching sexual health, called Teaching SRE with Confidence. Finally teachers from schools around the country comment on these resources and give us their ideas on some of their favourite resources as well as ones you can create yourself. How schools equip students to make informed choices about drugs

Find out how two primary schools teach the facts about drugs and help equip their students with the life skills to make informed choices about drugs in future. This programme features new techniques for teaching pupils the facts about drugs, and equipping them with the skills in order to make informed choices. Saltaire Primary and Riddlesden St Mary's Primary take on the challenge of building an effective drugs education programme for their schools. Advice is offered by PSHE educator Jan Newman from Life Education Centre who visits St Mary's to deliver their own age specific PSHE lessons. The programme focuses on how the knowledge is differentiated by age and built on year-by-year from reception to Year 6. An example of this is their efforts to make younger pupils aware of how special their bodies are and how to look after them. It also shows how the schools introduce pupils to the different types of drugs and their consequences, including both legal and illegal drugs, and use role-play to help the children prepare to make assertive decisions about drugs in the future.
