Discover two schools' creative anti-cyberbullying strategies

This KS2-KS4 lesson-planning resource shows the impacts of cyberbullying and how children can become cyberbullies. It supports Every Child Matters and addresses human health and safety, and personal and social skills. See a drama played out in a PSHE lesson at Bradon Forest School, Purton, depicting a cyberbully accused of posting a picture online without consent. ICT is also used to help create storyboards. At St Mary's C of E Primary School, Purton, the pupils create dramas to learn about cyberbullying, also making lists of their rights and responsibilities when using computers and mobile phones. On hand to provide parents, teachers and pupils with guidance on dealing with cyberbullying is Childnet Education Manager, Ellen Ferguson.

This primary and secondary lesson starter resource demonstrates to Key Stage 2-4 pupils how people's intentions can be misunderstood in emails and texts. A secondary schoolgirl receives a text message from her friend and, due to the lack of face-to-face speech, and room for misinterpretation, she's offended and distressed. This video highlights how cyberbullying can start innocently. It addresses personal and social skills and supports Every Child Matters, and is designed to stimulate KS2-KS4 classroom discussion around e-safety.

A primary and secondary lesson idea on e-safety and anti-bullying

Teach primary and secondary PSHE pupils the risks and impacts of cyberbullying. This classroom resource can open discussion around Every Child Matters issues including e-safety, anti-bullying and personal and social skills. A primary school pupil becomes the victim of cyberbullying after a picture of her taken at a friend's birthday party is posted online. The picture is uploaded onto a social networking site without her knowledge, causing her distress.

An innovative way to make school fun and improve performance

This programme takes a look at how one innovative school in Nottinghamshire is making education fun and improving performance. Grange Primary School has two shops, a canteen, a craft centre, a TV and radio station and a museum, all run by pupils working to AS level standards. Not bad for a school that was under achieving three years ago! The project aims to make learning more relevant to everyday life. Every Friday afternoon pupils get to work on their Grangeton enterprise and by the time they reach Year 4, are able to apply for management positions within the village. Such is the success of this remarkable project, the local secondary school has asked Grange Primary to help develop the village for secondary level.

Discover four schools' approaches to increasing pupils' wellbeing

Four schools' approaches to increasing the happiness and wellbeing of pupils are shown in this whole-school video on personal and social skills in primary and secondary, linked with Every Child Matters. By adopting nurture group principles, headteacher Jeni Barnacle has transformed behaviour and performance at St Andrew's Primary in North Pickenham. The principles involve creating an atmosphere of mutual respect and positive values, with great emphasis on role play and hands-on learning. Year 10 students undergo brain mapping to identify their individual strengths and weaknesses, at King Harold School in Waltham Abbey. The aim is for self-knowledge to provide a route to personal fulfillment. Positive psychology has been introduced to the curriculum at Strath Haven High School, Pennsylvania. And finally, Alsop High School in Liverpool is exploring the use of humour, as professional comedian Steph Davies builds up pupils' self-confidence by running workshops on stand-up comedy.

An interactive story that encourages discussion of bullying

This programme, which has been designed for use in the classroom, helps tackle bullying by exploring the feelings of all those involved. Year 6 pupils from Hollickwood Primary School in north London, have created an interactive photo-story that follows the thoughts and actions of a bullying victim, the four children who bully him, and his classmates who suggest ways to help him. There are five "talking points" in the story that allow teachers to stop the programme and encourage discussion about the issues raised. In addition, the Hollickwood pupils who created the photo-story discuss what they have learnt from the experience.

KS2 pupils present a show about feelings at school

In this programme KS2 pupils present their own show, where feelings are the topic of the day. For the children of Our Lady of Lourdes RC Primary School and Our Lady of Grace Junior School, the classroom becomes the television studio from which they present facts, strategies, advice and scenarios about emotional issues that KS2 children will recognise. The aim is to inform and stimulate further discussion and work around the SEAL topics of New Beginnings, Getting on and Falling Out, and Going for Goals.

 A look at the Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning 

In this programme, staff from West Drayton Primary School in Middlesex share their experiences and views on SEAL (the Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning). SEAL is a set of resources supplied by the DfES and the Primary National Strategy to offer a whole-curriculum framework for teaching social, emotional and behavioural skills to all children. Its aims - to develop the underpinning qualities and skills that help promote positive behaviour and effective learning - are certainly worth achieving. By looking at the experiences of a school already using SEAL, this programme aims to help teachers make the most of these resources.

Empowering older pupils using the buddy system

In this programme, two schools demonstrate some of the techniques they use to develop self-esteem, including playground buddies, school councils and circle time. A variety of techniques to develop self-esteem are demonstrated by two schools, Saltaire Primary near Leeds and Riddlesden St Mary's Primary in Bradford. This programme takes a look at a playground "buddy" system, whereby older pupils are empowered by working and playing with new children at the school. The use of the school council and the benefits of involving children in decision making processes is investigated, as well as a circle time lesson used to help pupils recognise and value their strengths and differences. The teachers and PSHE expert Jan Newman from the Life Education Centre give their views on the effectiveness of these techniques.

  Using PSHE as part of a broader strategy to tackle bullying  

A look at the ways in which one primary school in north London has used PSHE as part of their strategy to tackle bullying and transform pupils' behaviour. Aggressive and bullying behaviour were big issues at Hollickwood Primary School. One year after their anti-bullying strategy was implemented, OFSTED judged behaviour at the school to be "outstanding". So how have they done this? According to headteacher Chris Ryan, it's all about developing practical ways to help pupils understand bullying, managing pupils' emotions and above all, encouraging them to 'tell'. Ryan's first concern is to ensure that everyone at the school understands what bullying is. Year 6 created their own anti-bullying interactive powerpoint that explored the feelings of all those involved in bullying. Potential bullies are also taught calming tricks to help them manage their emotions. Deputy head John Westmore explains how pupils at Hollickwood have become emotionally articulate, helping to create an environment where bullying fails to thrive.
