Three schools' approaches to sex education for nursery and KS1/2

Some experts now claim children should learn about sexual differences and appropriate sexual behaviour from as young as nursery age. This video reveals the sex-education policies of three different schools. In this video for nursery schools and KS1/KS2, Shepherd Special School headteacher David Stewart explains the importance of teaching pupils about their bodies from Early years age. Sex-education pioneer Dylis Wentshares David's view. Watch a lesson in progress, as pupils learn about parenthood from a mother-to-be and a mother and baby. At Glenbrook Primary in Nottingham, life cycles and reproduction are taught as part of the science curriculum in Year 6, complimented by four lessons from a school nurse. Headteacher Paul Heery is satisfied that this is all the education pupils need until secondary school. At Sketchley Hill School in Leicester, 60 per cent of parents turned up to a meeting on sex education. The school recognises the subject is important for children, and it begins teaching at Year 5.

Pioneering work on SRE at Shepherd School in Nottingham

Shepherd School in Nottingham has been endorsed by Ofsted as a site of best practice in delivering Sex and Relationship Education to young people with learning difficulties. The pioneering approach to sex and relationship education is explored, aiming to stimulate debate among professionals about delivering an SRE curriculum for pupils with severe and profound learning difficulties. Headteacher David Stewart aims to ensure that young people with learning difficulties are safe but that they are also able to enjoy happy sexual lives and healthy relationships. Controversially, David argues SRE needs to begin when pupils are as young as five. The school believes that the rights and choices involved in SRE form an important part of the citizenship curriculum, and that concessions must not be made because the individual has a learning difficulty.

Vanessa Feltz accepts the challenge to teach a Year 6 class

Broadcaster and columnist Vanessa Feltz takes up the challenge to teach a Year 6 class from St. Edwards RC Primary School, London. Having expressed a desire to teach, Vanessa is thrown in at the deep end and is faced with giving a PSHE lesson on relationships to the class. She is faced with the nail-biting task of communicating effectively with 25 children, under the watchful eye of straight-talking teacher Julie Wooldridge. Vanessa aims to give a realistic lesson on the subject with the help of some lively role play, but admits that she may "crash and burn" under the pressure!
