Students discover about life in India from a partner school

As they embark on their India project, teachers from Braunton Secondary School in Devon use video to record their pupils' initial ideas. Deputy headteacher David Butt starts by recording his pupils' discussion as they pose questions about India in a geography lesson. These are sent by email to their Indian partner school, but before getting the reply the pupils try to guess what the answers might be. Not surprisingly, when the answers come back there are a few surprises, like the length of the school day - from 8am to 8:30pm! The next stage is for the pupils to video a conversation with an Indian visitor, Rittika Chanda Parruck from the British Council in Delhi, which exposes some further misconceptions. In the discussion that follows, Rittika is joined by David, by the school's head of geography and by a local authority adviser. The group discusses the value of using video as a means of gathering evidence from the start of the project.

A look at the work of a refugee school in Ghana

This programme looks at the work of the Carolyn A. Miller Elementary School in Ghana. Located in the Buduburam Liberian Refugee Camp, the school offers pupils education against a backdrop of war, brutality and poverty. The school, founded by refugee Karrus Hayes, struggles with hungry pupils, unpaid staff, no electricity and resources, however has high ambitions for its pupils and a spirit that is as uplifting as it is humbling. This everyday look at a refugee school shows scenes that are both familiar and remarkably different for teachers here in the UK. Amongst the day-to-day business of meetings, PTAs, discipline discussions and lesson planning are a look at over-crowded classes, and a drama teacher who is only too aware that his pupils are the future leaders of Liberia.

How education is delivered to the people of the Indian Himalayas

How an NGO is working in the Indian Himalayas to help teach the children of a nomadic tribe. Living 14,000 feet above sea level, the Changpa nomads are isolated, and often cut-off by weather conditions, making formal education difficult. With the help of Pragya, a non-governmental organisation, teachers and managers are trained from within the community to overcome the shortage of staff willing to work there. They also create canvas classrooms which can move with them across the mountains, with power supplied by wind and solar power.

A school in India tries to reduce its carbon footprint

This programme showcases a student-made video from Springdales School in Delhi, where the pupils have been measuring carbon footprints and taking action to reduce global warming in their school. School principal Ameeta Wattal believes education is power and all power should be used for service, and in keeping with this ethos, the students are reducing their carbon footprint. Senior students teach the juniors how to measure carbon footprints and to reduce emissions through everyday choices and behaviour. They hope that their video will take the message to schools across India and to their cluster of partner schools in the UK, so that they too can make a difference. Consultant Adrienne Jones is joined by Ameeta and teachers Nidhi Tewari and Pramada Lele to discuss the project. Nidhi's computer lab seemed to have the greatest carbon footprint in the school, so the students went to the principal for action.

A young boy talks about his working life in India, in this short video aimed at Key Stage 3 global citizenship students. Anil explains how he works extremely long hours for a very low wage because his income is needed to support his family. A secondary class can learn that, like the other child labourers in his village, Anil is too poor to go to school.

Bradford schools tackle community cohesion internationally

Schools in Bradford show how a three project with schools in Peshawar, Pakistan, have helped promote community cohesion. Teacher exchanges have been followed by developments in teaching, learning and the curriculum. Extended services and engagement have been addressed through collaboration across the Bradford schools and with other diverse communities in the UK. The projects focus on themes such as the outdoor classroom and cultural heritage and achieve an international dimension through email, skype, text messaging as well as the exchange of pupils' work between Bradford and Peshawar schools. There is also a look at how UK schools are developing video conferencing to allow pupils to share lessons and eventually work directly with the schools in Peshawar. This programme was filmed in association with the British Council.

A focus on the European Union's Lifelong Learning programme

A focus on the European Union's Lifelong Learning programme, which offers teachers and other school staff opportunities for European professional development. Ridings High School in Winterbourne has been involved with the EU's project since 2004 and is linked with schools in Germany, Norway and Spain. The aims of the current project - Bringing Young People Together in the 21st Century - are to develop awareness and understanding between the partnership schools, regions and countries by focusing on language, lifestyle, heritage and culture, and to integrate international teaching and learning into this effort. Watch as teachers and students from Ridings High travel to Saldaa in Spain, where pupils from all four countries will spend time together, communicating in different languages and learning about each other's countries. The pupils go to lessons in the school and live with Spanish families in order to learn about Spanish culture and tradition.
