Teenagers prejudices and alliances are challenged at Brit Camp

On a special camping trip in the Lake District, six teenagers from diverse backgrounds discover what it means to be British, as the divides between them are explored. In the final part of the series the teenagers cook and set up camp for the night. In a heated campfire debate some of the children reveal how they wouldn't be able to mix with the others in their everyday lives. During the series the group, who may never have met in ordinary circumstances, have worked with historian and social cohesion expert Dr Nick Barratt on a range of activities designed to help them discover what their national identity means.

A lively debate about what being British really means

Krishnan Guru-Murthy presents a lively debate about what being British means, and the role of schools in teaching Britishness. The panellists include the right-wing writer and academic Douglas Murray, and the author of the Government's report on citizenship and diversity in schools, Sir Keith Ajegbo. Also on the panel are the first black President of the NUT, Baljeet Ghale; and British Paralympian Ade Adepitan MBE. The programme is recorded in front of a studio audience made up of teachers, experts, parents and children.

In the second part of the series, they discover what life is like on a Lake District farm, and explore their preconceptions of each other. During the series, they continue to work with historian and social cohesion expert Dr Nick Barratt on a range of activities designed to uncover their national identity. But can such exercises on identity help breakdown the prejudices that separate them?

Building Bridges

Students from the City Academy Bristol, who are refugees or asylum seekers, work hand in hand with a group of elderly people on a joint project to benefit the whole community.The young pupils who may have little or no English, work with the older volunteers in pairs to design and create a mosaic for the Trinity Community Centre, with guidance from artist Victoria Appleton. The activity encourages communication between the two groups to improve the language skills of the students and to bring representatives from old and new communities of Bristol together, helping to break down barriers and build positive relationships.

Six children from diverse backgrounds across Britain are brought together on a summer camping trip where they will discover what it means to be British. Episode one introduces the six children for the first time, with a look at their home town providing an insight into who they feel they are, and the social politics that surrounds them. As they meet each other for the first time, their initial reactions are also shown. During the series, the six teenagers work with historian and social cohesion expert Dr Nick Barratt on a range of activities designed to help them discover what their nationanl identity means.

Three inspiring stories from young people

Three inspiring stories from young people determined to get their voices heard. Somalian born refugee Hodan Addawe, was sent alone to England for safety, education and the chance of a better life. Hodan wanted what most children would want, for her parents to be with her. A teacher from City Academy Bristol recognised her needs and suggested she might try and campaign for their entry in the UK. Can a young child really be expected to take on central government and win? Also in this programme, a playwright and a group of actors explore citizenship and democracy with humour, wit and intelligence; while in the last story a group of surfers challenge the way the local council and water authorities manage our natural resources.

A look at refugee and asylum-seeking children's life stories

Refugee and asylum-seeking children from around the world tell their own fresh and moving stories straight to camera. Woven together, their stories tell of conflict at home, the dreams and disappointments of coming to Britain, and the pain and joy of family reunions and separations. For all of the children, learning English is key to fitting in, making friends and getting the education they all value highly. Some are already sure that Britain is home now, with all its differences in street and playground culture; some dream of going home with the skills and qualifications to help build a new country. But continuing conflict produces a bleaker outlook in others. Teachers are asked to understand that many such children have a lot on their minds, however much they appreciate school.
