A physical geographer who has climbed Everest talks about her career in this engaging short video for use in Key Stage 3 and KS4 PSHE lessons. Tori James discusses her experience of climbing the world's tallest mountain, including how it enabled her to study glaciers and erosion. Secondary pupils can also hear Tori describe how she uses her geographical knowledge in a practical way in her work.

A introduction to globalisation with professors and experts

This programme explores the key concepts of globalisation, with Diane Swift from the Geographical Association explaining its significance. Saskia Sassen is a world-renowned professor who coined the term "global city". She explains how London is a prime site of globalisation and what to look out for in a city. Professor Danny Dorling explains how immigration and migration is central to globalisation, as he specialises in race and equality. Danny and his team map the changing social, political and medical geographies through the innovative Worldmapper project.

An uncut lesson looking at environmental issues

Claire Mckenzie, a fast track geography teacher from a North Somerset school, takes her Year 7 class through the question of farmers, hedgerows and their impact on the environment. Claire uses brainstorming, role play and advocacy, through which the class can explores the advantages of and problems with hedgerow removal, and empathise with farmers. The pupils also create mind maps. Later in the lesson Claire uses a different technique to encourage the class to complete their own assessment about where they stand on the issue This programme shows a complete lesson, uninterrupted and unedited with the intention of developing classroom observation skills. Four teachers demonstrate geographical field work in Antarctica

Explore the geology of glaciers and learn about the challenges of field work in extreme climates as a group of intrepid teachers go on a four-week expedition to Antarctica. The first half of this programme looks at glaciers, using case studies of glaciers in both Norway and the South Pole. It also looks in more detail at Antarctica and the geography of the continent. It then looks at the experience of a group of British teachers conducting geographical field work in Antarctica. While studying the abundance of cryoconite holes on a glacier, the teachers discover how tough it can be to undertake field work in a harsh climate.

Real-life stories from foreigners living in the UK

This programme shows moving stories about refugees, asylum seekers and economic migrants. The personal accounts bring these labels to life in the classroom, showing the pupils what it's like to be a foreigner trying to make the best of living your life in another country. Saranda was 13 when she and her family fled from Kosovo in fear of their lives. They were Albanians and that meant they were no longer welcome in their homeland. She tells us what being a refugee and living in the camps in Macedonia was like and how they ended up in the UK. In Liverpool, unable to speak English, they became asylum seekers afraid to go back and lived a life in limbo. Six years on she is fluent, well educated and happy, but still wishes she could go back to her real home in Kosovo. Anne-Marie left the island of Mauritius when she was a teenager to find a bigger and better life in Italy. She got a job, met her husband and had two children but still felt there were no prospects. The family decided to come to the UK where her husband had relatives. So they got in a van and drove to London. In this film she talks about what happened to them.

A group of pupils visit Iceland to study geographical features

A group of KS3 and KS4 geography pupils take a trip to Iceland to enhance their learning and to see local features. On the trip the pupils learn about and get an up close view of geographical features such as geysers, waterfalls, volcanoes and glaciers. Follow them on their adventures to see what they saw and learn what they learnt, as well as seeing the benefit of taking a field trip to Iceland.

Two sustainability initiatives in California are explored

California is one of the top surf locations in the world and also home to Universal Studios. This programme focuses on the protection of the coastline and Universals Studios' initiatives to become environmentally friendly. Threats to California's coastline have presented new challenges to surfers, and they have responded by developing their own foundation to sustain the coastline. The Surfrider Foundation was set up 25 years ago and now has almost 60,000 activists and volunteers across the United States, with 80 chapters across the world. Meanwhile on an average summer's day 30,000 visitors take tours of the Universal Studio sets and enjoy rides on themed attractions in the park. Alongside its mission to entertain, Universal has recently adopted a number of measures to become more environmentally friendly, including cleaner, greener rides, like the new Simpsons ride.

An architect teaches a GCSE geography class about design

Gillian Horn is a celebrated architect, whose school and hospital designs break away from traditional ideas of form and function. This programme challenges her to teach a GCSE geography class at Lillian Baylis School in south London about the relevance of design in their environment. Gillian's task is to persuade the students that everything around them, from basketball trainers to hospitals can be utilised and incorporated into their design. Gillian a partner in the London based firm Penoyre and Prasad, explains her involvement in designing schools in the UK. Afterwards geography Teacher Sian Kennedy discusses with Gillian about what she thinks of her performance with her students.
