A look at three ICT resources for secondary MFL

In this episode, we highlight three great ICT resources for teaching secondary MFL. How a school inspired learning in MFL through sharing resources

Teachers demonstrate how they have encouraged learning in MFL, through various means including the creation of a website, showing ideas that can be easily transfered to other schools. Notre Dame High School is a specialist Language, Science and Training School for pupils aged 11 to 18 years. Teachers at the school have a wide range of experience in working with other schools to develop educational opportunities for their students, and to share resources and expertise. Two of the teachers, Yvonne Gorrod and Julian Faulkner have made websites full of resources for Spanish and German teaching. These resources have been used by several modern langauage departments locally, nationally and internationally. MFL coordinator Nelly Seetanah visits feeder schools across Norfolk and Suffolk and teaches students from all levels different languages, while teacher Thomas Pritchard has developed links with a school in Japan to improve his students' speaking skills. Collectively, the teachers share their resources to deliver a top language curriculum both locally and nationally.

Ideas for using ICT to teach MFL at secondary level

Innovative ICT applications which support the teaching of MFL are investigated, including web applications that encourage boys to speak, and ways of using the internet to keep students interested. At Nottingham High School for Boys, head of MFL Jose Picardo finds that using a range of stimulating web applications is a good way to get his boys speaking high quality Spanish. Fiona Hilton at Kingstone School in Barnsley uses the internet to stimulate her students' interest in French life and language. She downloads French language videos to trigger vocabulary work with her Year 10 class, encourages them to use the internet for research, and use an inter-school social network to communicate with French-speaking students around the world. Finally, at Cramlington Learning Village the emphasis is on encouraging students' self-assessment skills. A Year 9 group practices their spoken French by creating an audio-visual presentation about Haiti.

Using ICT to get boys to speak in secondary MFL

A short video looking at innovative ICT applications that can be used to encourage KS3/4 students to speak up in secondary MFL lessons. At Nottingham High School for Boys, Head of MFL Jose Picardo finds that using a range of stimulating web applications is a good way to get his boys speaking good quality Spanish. He demonstrates the effectiveness of these, whether used with students who have just started the language, or are preparing for their GSCE oral presentations.
